I actually finished this one prior to the completion of Sketch 7: Bay of Las Crucesitas, due to a much more pressing deadline: my wife Stacey’s birthday. Stacey thankfully loves my artwork, and I feel like whenever I create something for her, I push myself beyond a certain comfort zone.
In this busy street scene taken from a car window near Millineum park, I tried something new by first creating the under drawing in pen, and then later painting over it with black gesso. Usually I just do one or the other, completing all previous pieces in either all gesso, or entirely gel pen. The result is something of a hybrid, where objects in the distance are less detailed than those in the forground, giving the restricted palette and inherently 2-D surface more depth. The piece is a little over 4 feet wide, and hangs nicely in our study.
